The cost of fossil fuels continues to rise. In order to break free from this dependence, energy renovation offers the possibility of a heating, water and ventilation system based on renewable energies. There are various module options in the renovation process. For example, insulating the façade, insulating the roof, installing new windows or installing a heat pump and connecting it to a PV system are some of the options. Depending on the measure, you can reduce your heating costs by between 5 and 20 %. The payback period for various renovation options is usually between 8 and 15 years.

The state offers a subsidy to anyone who has their house renovated for energy efficiency. Since 2020, however, these are no longer provided by KfW, but by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) through the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG). There are various types of subsidies that can be claimed for different renovation work. For example, the BAFA BEG EM is awarded for individual measures on the building envelope (insulation, windows, doors).

Depending on the renovation work, various permits may need to be obtained before implementation. In addition, an individual energy consultation is recommended before implementation. During this consultation, the savings potential of your house and a personal renovation concept can be worked out. You should also find out about the regulations that apply to your building project from the local authorities. For example, some localities have different or stricter requirements for the construction of solar systems. If your house has a historical value or is a protected monument, this also poses a problem.

Energy-efficient renovation can only be carried out on houses that are fully functional and habitable. It is not a question of building up the living space, but only of adapting and changing individual elements of the house. Here, a house that is already well-insulated and built with foresight is advantageous.

For a photovoltaic system, for example, the planned area and its orientation are decisive. Heat pump technology is mostly used in new buildings. And for building insulation, the most important thing is adequate ventilation and a solution for moisture problems. Since the prerequisites for the various elements are very different, these must be developed with regard to your individual renovation concept.
